NUSI Maritime Academy, GOA

The National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) is the leading seafarers’ union in the country. The NUSI Maritime Academy was conceived during a period when Indian shipping faced serious challenges, including a shortage of manpower, an aging workforce, and a lack of new entrants. The situation worsened when the government shut down all three existing ratings training establishments, leaving no institution in India to train ratings after 1983.
Recognizing the complete absence of seafarers’ training facilities in the country, the NUSI/ITF Trust took the initiative to establish the NUSI Maritime Academy. The objectives of the Academy are:
-
To train candidates for a career in the Merchant Navy by equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitude.
-
To enhance the knowledge, skills, and attitude of existing seafarers.
-
To foster a spirit of mutual learning between trainees and trainers, ensuring all stakeholders stay updated with the latest technological and industry developments in the rapidly evolving shipping sector.

The Academy is located 50 km south of Dabolim Airport and 13 km from Margao city. It lies just 3 km off National Highway No. 17, which connects the ports along the Konkan coast. Nestled in the village of Sucaldem, Chinchinim, Goa, the Academy is spread across 35 acres of lush coconut and cashew plantations, situated at the confluence of two scenic branches of the River Sal, just before they meet the Arabian Sea.
The NMA is headed by a Captain Superintendent (CS), who is responsible for overall management of the Academy and reports directly to the Chairman on all matters related to the institution.
